One look at the calendar will tell you that the holiday season is fast approaching. There are also less subtle signs, such as your children suddenly all behaving, your significant other dropping hints about preferred presents everywhere and your wallet feeling noticeably lighter. These are all telltale signs that the holidays are just around the corner.

Naples Island is often called one of the most beautiful Southern California holiday locations because of all the lights put up by the residents. Neighbors and neighborhoods compete against each other to create the most magical holiday displays that attract thousands of light gazers from all over the area. There are also light tours available for those who want to get the full experience and a waterfront tour option with an included Ferris wheel. The lights are put up at different times, but starting at the beginning of December through the rest of the month, visitors will find the dazzling displays are in full effect!

This year’s Winter Fest runs from November 24 through January 7 and features over 1 million glorious lights, enough holiday decor to drive one giddy, a cornucopia of thrilling activities, a snow play area, a 150-foot tubing slide, a carnival, a holiday market, and plenty of food. Between matinees and even shows, there are nine different performances December 14–18 at the Honda Center in Anaheim (Motto: The city where the Disney dream became reality!). Kids will have a blast singing and dancing along with Mirabel and her sisters, Isabela and Luisa. Then they can join the race to find Elsa and end the eternal winter in this frigid holiday extravaganza.

Since Norwalk, California, doesn’t see the same winter weather as many other parts of the country, decorating your home is a great way to get into the holiday spirit, but it’s important to make sure your decorations aren’t at risk of harming you, your loved ones, or your neighbors. If you’re looking to improve your credit score, we have some great news: Paying rent to build credit is not only possible, but it’s also a great strategy for improving your score!

This isn’t just our opinion, either. In 2017, TransUnion

           studied

12,000 renters who reported their rent payments to credit bureaus over the course of a year. The study determined that, on average, renters’ credit scores rose by 16 points within six months! Not only that, but those with starting scores below 620 saw the greatest score increases.

This same strategy can work for you if you pay your rent online! Doing so allows your payments to be reported, gives credit bureaus information they are looking for, and can combine with credit card payments to realize greater gains to your score. Here’s how it works:

Gives Credit Bureaus Information They Are Looking For

First, it helps to understand what the credit bureaus are looking at when they determine your credit score. Experian, for example, determines credit scores through the

           following elements

When you pay your rent online, the payments become part of your payment history. As you pay on-time and in-full each month, that information is factored into your score, too.

Allows Your Payments to Be Reported

“Simply paying your rent will not help you build credit,”

           says

Bev O’Shea at NerdWallet. “But reporting your rent payments can help you build credit—especially if you are new to credit or do not have a lot of experience using it.”

So how do you ensure your rent payments are reported? At

           The Courtyards

, we use an online rental payment system that reports directly to the credit bureaus. This way, credit bureaus receive a record of your on-time rental payments, which strengthens your credit score. In order to opt in for the credit reporting, follow these steps:

Combines with Credit Card Payments to Realize Greater Gains

If you want to add even more of a boost to your score, consider this piece of advice from LaToya Irby, credit expert for The Balance: “Open a credit card and use it to pay your rent . . . then pay your credit card balance in full each month. The timely credit card payments will help boost your credit score.” You don’t have to pay your rent with a credit card, but it can be a nice little boost to your credit score in combination with the other benefits of paying your rent online.

So, paying rent to build credit? It’s not only possible, but it’s also an easy way to boost your score. Get started by visiting the

This beautiful 2.6-mile trail is a great hiking loop that will suit everyone, regardless of skill level. Apply your sunscreen and stay hydrated, as there’s very little shade on this trail. Be sure to bring your camera to capture the beautiful wildflowers, stunning scenery, and adorable bunnies and birds you’ll find along the way! Consider going at off-peak times to ensure you’ll find parking.

For the moderately advanced hiker, this “out and back” trail is 2.4 miles with challenging inclines to get your workout in. At the top of the trail, you’ll reach the water tower and have some pretty spectacular views of LA on a clear day! Sun protection and plenty of water are needed for this low-shade trail. Parking does become limited on weekends, so consider going during the week when there are fewer people on the trail.

If you’re looking for an easy trail without much incline, this might be the one for you. It is a nature path next to the river, and you may see wildflowers and likely plenty of wildlife, despite it being in an urban area. It’s a two-mile loop to complete the trail. An overcast day might be preferred for this hike, as views would not be compromised while the clouds shade you from the sun.

Every summer, our AMC family comes together to clean up our parks and beaches. While COVID-19 restrictions are keeping us from gathering in person this year, we’re still moving this tradition forward!

On July 25, we are asking everyone to conduct their own park or beach cleanup with members of their household. We’ll be joining you too—from at least six feet away per current social distancing guidelines! Together, we can preserve and beautify these areas that are so important in sustaining our wonderful city! Here are the benefits of cleanup and the supplies and safety precautions you’ll need.

As mentioned above, maintaining clean parks and beaches can benefit communities in great ways! Additionally, participating in a park or beach cleanup can immediately benefit us individually as well!

For starters, park cleanup is a great way to get some fresh air and add some exercise to your day. Bending, squatting, and hauling the trash around can give your body a unique workout. And, as a side note, if you jog while you pick up trash, you will have joined the

Every day is smoothie day in our book, so we’re happy to share the excitement for “National Smoothie Day” on June 21. Don’t let this day pass you by without treating yourself to a frozen drink. You might as well take the opportunity to sample a little something from one of the many businesses around Norwalk. Once you indulge in these healthy and satisfying treats, you may find yourself celebrating National Smoothie Day long after June 21 (and perhaps daily). And that’s a healthy habit we approve of!

With the Fourth of July just around the corner, it’s time to plan the festivities! Even though

this year’s celebration in Norwalk may look a little different due to social distancing

measures, it doesn’t mean you have to be any less festive. Bring the celebration to your home by infusing it with patriotic decor. Here are three Fourth of July crafts you should try this year to kick off your celebration:

           1. Easy Patriotic Mason Jars

This is a quick and simple way to add a patriotic splash to your bookcase, windowsill, or table.

            For this project

          , you’ll need the following:

Use the scissors to cut a strip of burlap long enough to reach around the middle of the jar. Position and secure with glue dots. Now, overlay the burlap with a patriotic ribbon and secure by tying a bow. Now, fill your jar with beautiful white hydrangeas, red carnations, or any other floral arrangement that aligns with the red, white, and blue patriotic theme. Alternatively, you can place battery-powered tea lights in the mason jars to create cute, shabby chic lanterns.

            2.

              Bandana Star Garland

This garland will add an American flare to any space. Hang it above your couch, drape it from a bookcase, or use it as a table runner. For this project, you’ll need the following:

Use a star-shaped stencil and a pencil to trace the shape onto red, white, and blue bandana-print scrapbook paper. (You can also create your own stencil by printing a star on computer paper, cutting it out, and tracing it onto cardstock. Cut the shape out of the cardstock, and you’ll have yourself a stencil.) Cut the shapes out with scissors. Use the hole puncher to create a hole at the top of each star. String them together with twine. Hang in the desired location and enjoy!

           3. Patriotic Lollipop Topiary

This one is both fun to look at and delicious—our kind of crafting project! These lollipops are positioned to create the look of a topiary. Just make sure you keep extra lollipops on hand to replenish the design in case you or your guests can’t resist eating one here and there.

            For this project

          , you’ll need the following:

Place the styrofoam ball inside the container. If the ball doesn’t fit securely inside, you may need to glue it to the container. Tighten the wrappers around the lollipops by twisting them at the base. Insert the lollipops into the styrofoam ball. Work in lines to create a nice, tight design without gaps. Work outward until the ball is completely covered in lollipops! Eat, replace lollipops in vacant spaces, and repeat!

No matter what your Fourth of July celebration in Norwalk may entail this year, remember to bring the festivities home as well! Adding these three easy crafting projects to your home decor will be a great way to continue the celebration long after the fireworks conclude.

is another plant that has been proven to remove significant levels of toxins from the air. This succulent with striking, multicolored pointed leaves is easy to care for and grows well in both low and high levels of light (although high, without a lot of heat, is best). Be careful about overwatering. Also, keep this variety away from dogs and cats, as it is known to be slightly toxic to them.

Only weekly watering is required. Keep this plant away from dogs and cats as well, as it can be mildly toxic to them.

Memorial Day is an important holiday that is often misunderstood. Barbeques, picnics, and other activities have come to be associated with this holiday, and many confuse Memorial Day with Veteran’s Day.

While Veteran’s Day honors all those who have served for our country, Memorial Day is set aside to specifically honor our fallen soldiers who

Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day and was first organized in 1868 to honor those who died in the Civil War.

As you’ve learned in history classes, World War I was terrible. The Industrial Revolution brought a whole new level of destruction and death, and bloody battlefields covered Europe. Amid this despair, the common red field poppy became one of the first plants to return once the war ended. In 1915, John McCrae, a Canadian Soldier, wrote about these flowers in his poem “

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

The poppy has become a symbol of our fallen soldiers. The deep red petals remind us of their sacrifices and devotion to our country.

While Memorial Day has gone through a variety of changes, its importance and meaning remain steadfast: we honor the men and women who have died for us and for our freedom. May we always reflect upon our fallen heroes and show appreciation for the freedom we enjoy.

showed that 3.6 percent of the nation’s workforce, some five million employees, worked from home at least half the time. Those numbers have obviously increased substantially.

The newest change, prompted by the closure of school during this COVID-19 pandemic, is that moms and dads are now trying to work, conducting homeschool study sessions, and entertain their children, all at the same time. To help effectively balance this new home situation, here are four survival tips for ensuring productivity and civility.

           1. Stick to a schedule.

For people new to working from home, the need to manage our schedule is a necessity. Luckily, pre-existing time-management skills will transfer into any work setting. The key is to start every day with a solid plan.

“Segment what you will do and when you will do it over the course of the day; provide yourself with breaks so that you are able to keep focused and avoid burnout,” says

           2. Keep workspaces and hours sacred.

We all know that children are no respecters of space. They will seek to interrupt you at the most awkward times. Spouses, too, will often assume that since you are home, you are available to handle certain chores or tasks. During this time of remote work, it’s important to outline with your entire family designated work-only zones and specific work hours. This will help you, as a diligent employee, avoid distractions and unplanned interruptions.

           3. Schedule adult “recess.”

Yes, you have work obligations, but that doesn’t mean you don’t deserve to take breaks throughout the day; everyone deserves recess now and then. What traditionally might have been spent in coffee breaks in the breakroom or around the water cooler of your office should now be spent in some playtime with the kids. Grab some chalk and head outside for a game of hopscotch. Challenge your kids to a jump-rope competition. Or just sit outside near the pool and enjoy some fresh air for your lunch hour.

           4. Practice patience.

We have reached a point where seeing children popping in and out of the background during video conference calls is almost expected. Now, more than ever, we must be understanding and patient when inevitable interruptions from little ones derail an important discussion. Remember, we are all in this together, doing the very best that we can under these unusual circumstances. Practice patience and embrace this new work-life balance routine.

Undoubtedly, working from home presents its challenges, all amplified when working alongside children. When we practice patience, plan for recess time, designate workspaces, and stick to a schedule, the rewards will prove positive and productive for everyone.

In December 2019, Kelly Clarkson asked her fans to submit

            stories about good neighbors

. This is what one person said about their former neighbor: “We will remain family from this point forward. I can’t imagine life without this amazing woman.” From small gestures of kindness to a lifelong bond, this transformation is an inspiring example of what can happen when you try your best to be a good neighbor. Want to join them? Here are six rules all good neighbors should follow.

Rule #1: Keep a Noise Curfew

What would life be without a little noise? Whether it’s cheering for your favorite sports team, singing along to love ballads, or using power tools for DIY craft projects, making noise is going to happen in your apartment. But good neighbors keep the noise within the rough boundaries of 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Rule #2: Be a Respectful Party Host

When a new neighbor moves in, go over and welcome them to the community! Bring them some treats, introduce yourself, and tell them about local events they might want to be aware of. It’s the neighborly thing to do.

is a great way to break the ice and meet your neighbors as you’re coming and going. A sweet puppy or an approachable cat is a sure way to bring smiles to your neighbors’ faces. On the other hand, a misbehaving pet can cause strife between you and your neighbors. Be sure to train and

           Rule #5: Don’t Be a Gossip

Did you hear something crazy about your downstairs neighbor? Keep it to yourself! It may be tempting to spread gossip, but think: Do you want to live in the kind of community where people gossip about each other? Encourage kindness by being the one to stop the spread of gossip.

The best way to handle conflict is to prevent it from happening in the first place. Be respectful, and let your neighbors know if you’re going to do something that will affect them. And if your neighbors are bothering you, be upfront and kind about it. If the issue escalates, follow

Millions of us click on viral posts of random acts online: people proudly post images of the exorbitant tip left to an unsuspecting waitress or videos of a rescue team saving a horse from drowning. Even today’s workplaces are exploring the emotional effects of kind acts among coworkers.

            University of British Columbia Study

, a test group comprised of highly anxious individuals performed at least six acts of kindness a week. After one month, there was a significant increase in positive moods and relationship satisfaction, as well as a decrease in social avoidance in socially anxious individuals. The act itself didn’t need to be big to be effective. Kind acts took larger forms like donating to a favorite charity and small gestures such as putting a quarter in a stranger’s parking meter that was about to expire.

“We found that any kind act appeared to have the same benefit, even small gestures like opening a door for someone or saying ‘thanks’ to the bus driver,” says Dr. Lynn Alden, who led the study. “Kindness didn’t need to involve money or time-consuming efforts, although some of our participants did do such things. Kindness didn’t even need to be ‘face to face.’”

In other words, it isn’t the size of the act that promotes happy feelings but the act itself. When anxiety creeps in, try being more kind. Doing so can help reduce your anxious feelings and replace them with positive ones.

Sometimes, the easiest way to live close to the communities you frequent isn’t to buy property, but to rent. “Renters can live virtually anywhere—a tiny apartment in Greenwich Village or a townhouse in Queens,” says professor of economics

There are certainly times when paying rent over is more expensive than paying a mortgage. For example, many renters will see their lease increase the moment their contract is up for renewal. But in some cases, experts say there are financial advantages to renting in desired locations rather than trying to buy property. “If you live in a market where you can rent an apartment for substantially less per month than you could own a home, you can invest the difference,” explains

Weliver presented an example like this: If you compare $1,000 rent per month versus a $1,300 mortgage payment on a comparable home, that generates $3,600 each year that you can save or invest. “And, unlike home equity, those savings are liquid,” added Weliver. “You can use them to build an emergency fund, pay down student loan debt, or fund a retirement account. None of which you can do with home equity.”

Most of us haven’t included installing an in-ground pool on our to-do list. But that doesn’t mean we wouldn’t enjoy having access to recreational amenities like a swimming pool, a fitness center, or tennis courts. And today’s rental properties are offering even more options to entice would-be renters.

Some of the more popular features include onsite laundry facilities or a washer and dryer within the unit. Many offer cable or satellite television and free Wi-Fi. Others offer fully-furnished units. And as a person just starting out on their own, having options for these types of services can help the transition to apartment living.

of the US workforce works remotely. But that also means employees are more mobile. And that is where the convenience of renting a home or apartment works well. Renting gives workers the freedom to move more frequently than they could otherwise. Additionally, some apartment communities offer amenities for workers. In some of our communities, for example, we offer dedicated workspaces, perfect for individuals who work remotely.

There are varying degrees of socializing among renters. You can be as social or reclusive as you choose; the fact remains that you are sharing common space with other people. Whether it’s the parking lot, the pool area, or the fitness center, apartment living offers a unique opportunity to befriend your neighbors.

Goals that truly make an impact are those that are specific and follow a timeline toward completion. For example, instead of making a goal to be thinner, a well-thought-out goal will include a series of smaller goals that encourage weight loss and are arranged over a month, a year, or two even years.

For instance, a goal to no longer be depressed may not be all that successful as a stand-alone goal. But setting a goal that is proven to help treat minor forms of depression, such as to eat two servings of fruits and vegetables every day or exercise daily, makes reducing or eliminating depression an added benefit to your primary goal, which may be losing twenty pounds. This brings us to the next benefit: your health.

In fact, out of the 2,000 people surveyed, 71 percent of them wanted to eat healthier in the coming year. Sixty-five percent of those surveyed planned to exercise more, and over half (54 percent) hoped to lose weight. Whether you are a fan of New Year’s resolutions or not, making conscious goals about lifestyle changes will have a positive impact on your overall health.

What is important?” Once again, setting up a SMART goal will help connect your goals with a meaningful outcome within a specified amount of time. And when it comes to goals about your health, the end result feels great.

Let’s consider for a moment what the process of setting goals is doing. According to

Edwin Locke and Gary Latham, goals not only affect behavior and work performance, but they also ignite a desire to put forth a higher and more persistent effort. And because with every action there’s a reaction, people around you are impacted by your efforts.

For example, if your goals are to be more productive and efficient at work and to manage your time better, you’ll likely return home sooner. Depending on what goals you’ve made regarding your habits at home, your family will benefit from the time you are able to spend with them. Perhaps you’ve made a goal to be more patient or a better listener. Those efforts impact others.

You will likely see similar positive effects if you have a goal to volunteer in your child’s school every month or plant a vegetable garden and share your harvest with neighbors. And as the cycle of goal-setting continues, you’ll be motivated to set more goals because of the positive feedback you receive from those who’ve benefited from your efforts. See? Win-win.

Don’t let the bad publicity surrounding resolutions fool you. Setting goals is a good thing. Nothing else is more effective and empowering than setting goals that improve your health, quality of life, focus, and contributions to the things you care about most. So let’s hear it for the new year and make it a goal to ensure it’s the best one ever.
