Three Plants to Grow in Your Apartment That Help Preserve Clean Air

It’s springtime! The birds are chirping, the blossoms are blooming, and there’s a newness in the air! But is that all that’s in your air?

Air pollution can be very damaging to our health. Since Americans spend approximately 90 percent of their time indoors, the air quality of our homes is very important. Sources of indoor air pollution can come from many things, even furniture or appliances. But did you know that incorporating certain houseplants into your living spaces can go a long way towards cleaning the air for you? Here are three plants you should consider adding to your decor today:

1. Gerbera Daisies

These brilliant florals will add a beautiful splash of color to your home, while also cleaning the air around you. In a NASA study , gerbera daisies were found to remove formaldehyde , benzene, and trichloroethylene from the air. Not only that, but they are easy to care for . All they need is plenty of sunlight without getting too much heat. And don’t worry about little ones getting ahold of them: They are non-toxic to humans and pets as well.

2. Warneckii

Warneckii is another plant that has been proven to remove significant levels of toxins from the air. This succulent with striking, multicolored pointed leaves is easy to care for and grows well in both low and high levels of light (although high, without a lot of heat, is best). Be careful about overwatering. Also, keep this variety away from dogs and cats, as it is known to be slightly toxic to them.

3. Mass Cane

The mass cane plant (sometimes referred to as the “corn plant”) is also effective in removing chemicals from the air —particularly formaldehyde. This is a great beginner plant because of its minimal-maintenance hardiness: It prefers indirect bright light, but it will also tolerate low light just fine. Only weekly watering is required. Keep this plant away from dogs and cats as well, as it can be mildly toxic to them.

Adding plants to your indoor living spaces not only improves the aesthetics of your home but also produces cleaner air. Choose those varieties that have been scientifically proven to remove common household contaminants so you can breathe even easier, and enjoy your vibrant, living home!
